Trump has decided to exempt coal used in steelmaking from Clean Air Act rules for the next two years. He issued a proclamation allowing coke oven facilities to sidestep existing limits on toxic emissions including mercury, formaldehyde, soot, and dioxins. The exemption also temporarily removes the requirement for these plants to monitor fence-line levels of benzene, a known cancer-causing chemical.
