Trump bought the Argentina election by threatening to withhold U.S. funds unless his preferred candidate won. We can’t let the same playbook unfold here next week. Trump and his administration have already been making threats about the upcoming U.S. elections, and the warning signs are clear.
The president’s efforts to manipulate or intimidate voting systems aren’t new. During his first term, he tried to direct the Attorney General, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to seize voting machines, a move that failed. Now, it appears federal officials may again be reaching into state election systems in ways that go far beyond legitimate oversight.
In July, county clerks in Colorado reported receiving unsolicited requests from someone claiming to represent DHS, demanding access to voting equipment, an action state officials called “absolutely against the law.” Around the same time, the Department of Justice began sending letters to states requesting voter lists and internal election information, while warning that states could lose federal grants if they didn’t comply.
The DOJ also announced plans to send federal observers to polling sites next week in California and New Jersey raising concerns that the move could suppress turnout or intimidate election workers. This is part of a broader Trump strategy using executive orders and administrative action to change how voter registration, mail-in ballots, and election administration are handled to help tilt the process toward his allies.
The Trump’s administration has threatened to withhold funding from New York if the mayoral race doesn’t go their way. Democracy only works if we defend it. Don’t let these tactics take hold here in the United States. Vote!
