This is so messed up… Amnesty International reports that detainees at Alligator Alcatraz (and at another facility, Krome North Service Processing Center) describe being placed in a “punishment box,” a cage-like structure in the yard so cramped that people could not sit, lie down, or even shift their weight. Some detainees say they were kept inside for hours at a time, and in the most serious accounts, for nearly an entire day. In several cases, individuals reported having their hands and feet shackled or fixed to the ground while confined in the box, leaving them immobilized and unable to relieve pain or adjust their posture. The structure offered no meaningful protection from the outdoors; detainees said they were left exposed to extreme Florida heat, relentless humidity, direct sunlight, swarms of insects, and the elements without shade, clean water, or basic sanitation.
