The Trump administration broke the law yet again, and now a federal judge is ordering the review and release of hundreds of immigrants. No one is above the law. Judge Jeffrey Cummings of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois found that many of the arrests violated the 2022 Castañon Nava consent decree, which sets strict limits on warrantless immigration detentions. He ordered the immediate release of 13 people whose detention clearly violated those rules, and directed the government to review roughly 615 additional cases involving individuals who aren’t subject to mandatory detention to determine whether they should also be released.
