So much for “states’ rights.” The Illinois state legislature passed a law (signed by Gov. JB Pritzker in early December) that limits federal immigration enforcement by preventing immigration officers from making arrests outside courthouses and making it easier for Illinois residents to sue immigration agents if they believe their rights were violated. The Justice Department sued the governor and attorney general in an effort to strike the law down. States should have the authority to enforce their own laws.
