Lori Chavez-DeRemer, born April 7, 1968, in Santa Clara, California, is an American politician and businesswoman. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from California State University, Fresno. Chavez-DeRemer served as mayor of Happy Valley, Oregon, from 2011 to 2019 and, in 2022, was elected as the U.S. Representative for Oregon’s 5th congressional district, becoming the first Republican woman and one of the first two Hispanic women to represent Oregon in Congress.
During her tenure in Congress, Chavez-DeRemer was noted for her pro-labor stance, co-sponsoring the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act and the Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act. She also served on the Agriculture, Education and the Workforce, and Transportation and Infrastructure committees.
On November 22, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Chavez-DeRemer to serve as Secretary of Labor. Her nomination has received support from labor organizations, including the AFL-CIO, whose President, Liz Shuler, acknowledged her pro-labor record. However, some union supporters remain cautiously optimistic, awaiting concrete actions once she assumes office.
Chavez-DeRemer is married to Dr. Shawn DeRemer, and together they founded an anesthesia management company, operating several medical clinics in the Pacific Northwest. They have twin daughters.
Her nomination is pending Senate confirmation.
