Kristi Noem, born November 30, 1971, in Watertown, South Dakota, is an American politician and member of the Republican Party. She has served as the 33rd governor of South Dakota since 2019, becoming the state’s first female governor. Prior to this role, Noem represented South Dakota’s at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019. Her political career began in the South Dakota House of Representatives, where she served from 2007 to 2011.
On November 12, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Governor Noem to serve as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This nomination underscores her strong stance on border security and immigration enforcement. Notably, as governor, she was the first to deploy National Guard troops to assist Texas in addressing border security challenges.
Noem’s nomination has received support from key figures, including Tom Homan, the incoming border czar, who praised her understanding of immigration issues and proactive approach to border security. However, her appointment has also raised concerns due to her limited experience in federal law enforcement and homeland security operations.
If confirmed by the Senate, Noem will be responsible for overseeing DHS’s multifaceted mission, which includes securing U.S. borders, managing immigration policies, and coordinating responses to natural and man-made disasters. Her leadership will be pivotal in shaping the nation’s homeland security strategies in the forthcoming administration.
