Name: Doug Collins

Doug Collins, born August 16, 1966, in Gainesville, Georgia, is an American attorney, military chaplain, and former politician. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Criminal Law from the University of North Georgia, a Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Juris Doctor from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.

Collins served as a pastor at Chicopee Baptist Church for 11 years before entering politics. He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2006, representing the 27th district until 2013. In 2012, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Georgia’s 9th congressional district, serving from 2013 to 2021. During his tenure, Collins was a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and played a significant role in defending him during impeachment proceedings.

In addition to his political career, Collins has a distinguished military background. He served as a Navy chaplain for two years and, following the September 11 attacks, joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a chaplain, achieving the rank of colonel. He was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On November 14, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Collins as Secretary of Veterans Affairs. If confirmed, Collins would oversee the department responsible for providing healthcare and benefits to U.S. veterans.

Collins’ nomination has been met with both support and criticism. Supporters cite his military service and legislative experience as assets, while critics express concerns about his political alignment and previous criticisms of the VA.

Throughout his career, Collins has been recognized for his commitment to public service, both in his legislative roles and military duties. He resides in Gainesville, Georgia, with his wife, Lisa, and their three children.
