Indiana House Republicans released a draft congressional map that is crafted to eliminate the state’s two Democratic seats. Under the proposal, Indianapolis would no longer be kept whole; instead, the city would be carved into four different districts a drastic shift from the current map, where it anchors the reliably Democratic 7th District.
The state’s other Democratic-leaning district in northwest Indiana would also be reshaped. Rather than keeping the Chicago-area communities together, the proposal pulls in a wide sweep of Republican-leaning counties from northern Indiana and pairs them with East Chicago and Gary to form a reconfigured 1st District.
