For all of you who were ragging on me for talking about how you can completely remove the top of a pull-tab can with your can opener (see attached video) and how it makes it easier to crush, admonishing me that “you’re not supposed to crush cans before recycling”, here in Boulder they *want* you to pinch the top of the can (not crush it flat, but you can’t do that anyways – however those pull-tab tops prohibit you from “pinching the top of the can”). Sure we can quibble about what the words “crush” and “pinch” mean, but *all* you can do when removing just the top is “crush” the top – in other words pinch it (and no, they don’t mean pinch the can until it squeals).
From the Boulder recycling website:
“Steel/tin cans:
Labels are okay
Pinch the open end of cans slightly
Do not crush or flatten”
