Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, has again pushed back against Trump after he reiterated that the United States “absolutely” needs Greenland and signaled he may act on the issue in the coming weeks. Trump framed the territory as essential to U.S. defense and a potential source of future mineral wealth. Frederiksen emphasized that Denmark (and therefore Greenland) is a member of NATO and covered by the alliance’s collective security guarantees. In the wake of recent actions involving Venezuela and statements from figures close to the administration, the renewed rhetoric has raised concerns that Greenland could be the next focus.
