Chapter 11: This Ain’t No Regular Summer Camp

I honestly don’t recall how I was moved from the Brooklyn temple to the children’s Gurukula school in Dallas, but it was either by plane or bus.

I also don’t recall the grounds or the building which housed the children’s campus, or, honestly, much of anything of note during that summer, except for two things.

The first is seared (perhaps quite literally) into my mind. The shower was in the basement. It was a stall shower, I have no idea how it had been set up, the basement was not finished, but there it was. One day I was down in the basement walking towards the shower, and I walked by the string that was hanging down on which one would, presumably, tug to turn on the light. It was daytime, and there was light enough in the basement, so I didn’t need to turn on the light, so as I walked by the string I batted it away with my hand.

Only, it turns out, it wasn’t the string to turn on the light.

It was a live electrical wire.
