A two-month-old named Juan Nicolás has been held with his mother at the South Texas Family Residential Center, an immigration detention facility near Dilley, Texas, for more than three weeks roughly half of his life. The infant had been exhibiting serious health problems, including persistent vomiting and difficulty breathing, while in custody.
Late Monday night (February 16, 2026), Juan was rushed from the detention center to a hospital after his condition worsened. Univision reported that he had experienced an episode where he was “choking on his own vomit,” and Representative Joaquin Castro (D-TX) posted that the baby needed urgent medical attention. At the time of the respiratory crisis, a doctor was reportedly not on site at the facility.
Hospital staff diagnosed Juan with bronchitis and treated him for his respiratory illness. After receiving care, he was released from the hospital and returned to the detention center with his mother. Medical care must be available and very young children should not be held in detention!
