Two civil rights attorneys who had spoken out against the Trump administration’s efforts to weaken enforcement of the Fair Housing Act were dismissed from their posts. Their work enforcing the Fair Housing Act (a cornerstone of U.S. civil rights) involved investigating and prosecuting landlords, real estate agents, lenders, and others accused of discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, family status, or disability. Since January, their office has been hit with steep budget cuts and new procedures that have slowed or halted thousands of pending discrimination cases.
