ICE officials insist they did not use excessive force. Yet in a chaotic scene at an immigration detention facility in the Chicago suburbs, Illinois Democratic congressional candidates reported being tear-gassed, hit with pepper balls, and shoved to the ground by federal agents while protesting Trump’s immigration surge into the city.
Since U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids began earlier this month, protesters have gathered outside the Broadview, Illinois, facility in largely peaceful demonstrations. But tensions boiled over on Friday, when agents body-slammed protesters, fired tear gas, and launched pepper balls that left demonstrators coated in a cloud of white powder.
Kat Abughazaleh, a Democratic congressional candidate, posted footage on social media showing heavily armed agents lifting her off the ground and throwing her down. She said the encounter injured her hand and left her with large bruises along her right side.
