He’s really going full fascism now, openly threatening American citizens while attacking both the press and basic democratic freedoms. Once again, Trump tried to glorify his deployment of the National Guard in U.S. cities by framing it as an act of war, circling back to rhetoric he first used earlier this month when he hinted online about declaring war on Chicago.

“We’re studying this, it’s sort of like war,” Trump said. “I mean I hate to tell you it’s like war.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Trump escalated again on Friday by claiming that reporters who criticize his administration are actually breaking the law, a direct assault on the First Amendment and the right of the press to challenge those in power. This comes just a day after he floated the idea that broadcasters should lose their licenses for airing negative coverage of him.

And the threats aren’t empty. The Pentagon quickly followed by announcing new restrictions on journalists covering the Department of Defense. Reporters will now be forced to pledge not to gather or use any information unless it has been officially approved, or risk losing their credentials to report on the military altogether.

At this pace, it won’t be long before all we’re allowed to see is: “Here is your state-approved propaganda.”
