Incident Overview

Tyler Robinson was identified as the suspect in the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, during a public appearance at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

Events Leading to Arrest

  • Law enforcement released images and video of the suspect, but it was Tyler’s father, Matt Robinson (age 48)—a retired sheriff—who turned him in after a confession and consultation with local pastors.
  • The FBI and law enforcement were criticized for mishandling the investigation and leaking false information, including blaming transgender people.
  • The arrest was made after the father, following a discussion with local pastors, contacted law enforcement.

Weapon and Evidence

- “Hey fascist! Catch! ↑ → ↓ ↓ ↓”
- “o bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao” (lyrics from an Italian anti-fascist song)
- “If you read this, you are gay LMAO”
- “Notices bulges. OwO. What’s this?” (a meme phrase)
  • The casings and rifle were found near Utah Valley University, the site of the shooting.
  • FBI footage shows a person running across a rooftop toward where the items were found.
  • Robinson reportedly told his roommate on Discord about needing to retrieve a rifle he left and referenced engraved bullets.
  • A family member said Robinson disliked Charlie Kirk and confirmed he drove a gray Dodge Challenger, matching the suspect vehicle seen in footage.

Arrest and Investigation

  • Robinson was arrested after his father, a retired sheriff, turned him in, following a confession and consultation with local pastors.
  • The family is described as white, Mormon, Republican, and “gun-toting.”
  • Robinson’s political radicalization is attributed to online meme and grievance culture, not to leftist ideology.

Current Status

  • As of September 12, 2025, Robinson is in custody and has been publicly identified by authorities.

According to a widely shared Facebook post by Ebonie Marie Baxter, Tyler Robinson is expected to face the death penalty at age 22 for the murder of Charlie Kirk. The post emphasizes that while justice will be served, Robinson’s family is also grieving, having played a role in bringing him to justice. The post and its comments reflect a mix of calls for justice, sympathy for both the victim’s and the suspect’s families, and broader discussions about accountability and forgiveness. As of now, this information is based on social media commentary and has not been officially confirmed by authorities or court records.

Online speculation has linked Tyler Robinson to the ‘Groyper’ movement, a group associated with alt-right, white nationalist, and Christian nationalist activism led by Nick Fuentes. The term “Groyper” refers to a variant of the Pepe the Frog meme, often used in online alt-right communities. Some social media users have pointed to a photo of Robinson in a black Adidas tracksuit, crouching in a pose reminiscent of the “Slav squat” meme, which is associated with the Groyper/Pepe imagery. This has led to claims that Robinson was a fan of Nick Fuentes and a member of the so-called “Groyper Army,” which has previously targeted mainstream Republicans, including Charlie Kirk and Turning Point USA.

However, these claims are based on unverified social media posts, and there is no official statement from authorities confirming Robinson’s political affiliations or motives. Voter records indicate Robinson was a registered but inactive voter, with no party affiliation, and he did not vote in the most recent presidential election. Authorities have noted that bullet casings found at the scene included anti-fascist and meme-related engravings, but have not confirmed any direct link to the Groyper or alt-right movements.

Transcript: Tyler Robinson and Roommate Text Exchange (as transcribed in charging documents)

The Roommate.

Police interviewed Robinson’s roommate, a biological male who was involved in a romantic relationship with Robinson. The roommate told police that the roommate received messages from Robinson about the shooting and provided those messages to police.

On September 10, 2025, the roommate received a text message from Robinson which said, “drop what you are doing. Look under my keyboard.” The roommate looked under the keyboard and found a note that stated, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.” Police found a photograph of this note.

The following text exchange then took place:

Roommate: After reading the note, the roommate responded, “What????????????? You’re joking, right?????”

Robinson: I am still ok my love, but am stuck in orem for a little while longer yet. Shouldn’t be long until I can come home, but I gotta grab my rifle still. To be honest I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you.

Roommate: Why did you do it? Who else do I tell right???

Robinson: I’m sorry.

Roommate: Have they caught the person?

Robinson: No, they grabbed some crazy old dude, then interrogated someone in another building. I had planned to grab my rifle from the ceiling port shortly after, but the police showed up and the whole level is locked. It’s quiet, almost dead, but I got out of there, stress of vehicle lingering.

Roommate: How long have you been planning this?

Robinson: Yeah

Roommate: I know this grief is hard. Some hate can’t be negotiated out. If I am able to talk to you, I will. If not, I will never hate you. I’m going to print out this exchange and hide it, literally they have moved on. I haven’t seen anything about it yet.

Robinson: ok love you

Roommate: I believe I can get close to it but there is a squad car nearby I think. If I think they already suspect me, I should leave now.

Robinson: I’m wishing I had circled back and grabbed it as soon as I got to my vehicle … I’m worried what my old man would do if I didn’t bring back grandpa’s rifle … sick if it had a serial number, but it wouldn’t matter. I worry about physics if I had to leave it in a bush where I thought to … didn’t have the ability or time to bring it with … I might have to abandon it somewhere if they don’t find prints. how the fuck will I explain losing it to my old man …

only thing I left was the rifle wrapped in a towel. …

remember how I was engraving bullets? The fuckin messages are mostly a big meme, if I see “notices bulge wut” on fox new I might have a stroke alright im gonna have to leave it, that really fucking sucks. …

judging from today I’d say grandpas gun does just fine idk. I think that was a $2k scope ;-;

Robinson: delete this exchange

Robinson: my dad wants photos of the rifle … he says grandpa wants to know who has what, the feds released a photo of the rifle, and it is very unique. Hes calling me, not answering.

Robinson: since trump got into office [my dad] has been pretty diehard maga.

Robinson: Im gonna turn myself in willingly, one of my neighbors here is a deputy for the sheriff.

Roommate: you are all I worry about love

Robinson: I’m much more worried about you.

Robinson: don’t talk to the media please. don’t take any interviews or make any comments. … if any police ask you questions ask for a lawyer and stay silent
