Wow. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. just single-handedly ruled that Congress doesn’t really control the purse strings. This is becoming a massive crisis for checks and balances and the separation of powers. Roberts temporarily paused a federal judge’s ruling that ordered the Trump administration to release $4 billion in foreign aid that Congress had already appropriated. Acting entirely on his own, the chief justice issued an interim “administrative stay” and gave challengers until Friday to file their brief. The full Court is expected to weigh in soon in what’s shaping up to be a case over presidential authority vs. Congress’s constitutional power of the purse.
