That pardon gave them their freedom and even seemed to satisfy their initial calls for revenge. But now they’re demanding more. In recent weeks, those same rioters and their lawyers have been lobbying the Justice Department, pushing for financial restitution. Their proposal? A special panel (similar to the one created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks) that would award them damages for what they claim were “unfair prosecutions.” The very people who fueled a violent insurrection now want the government to cut them a check.
