Thank you, Your Honor, and way to go, Utah! The state’s Legislature will now be forced to quickly redraw its congressional districts after a judge ruled that lawmakers had sidestepped voter-approved safeguards designed to prevent partisan gerrymandering. The map, put in place in 2021, split Salt Lake County, Utah’s most populous area and a Democratic stronghold across all four congressional districts, each of which has since reliably elected Republicans. While Judge Dianna Gibson did not weigh heavily on the map’s specific design, she struck it down as unlawful on the grounds that the Legislature had undermined and disregarded the independent redistricting commission created by voters to keep the process fair.
