Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced on social media(X) that federal border agents will be assigned to National Park Service sites as part of the broader federal law enforcement push in Washington, D.C. He said the Interior Department had authorized a “service-wide deputization” of Customs and Border Protection officers to bolster crime prevention efforts on park grounds. In practice, this means Border Patrol agents are being given temporary authority to act as law enforcement officers within the National Park Service system, a role typically reserved for park rangers and the U.S. Park Police. By deputizing CBP officers, Burgum is effectively expanding their powers so they can legally enforce laws and operate as police inside national parks, monuments, and other federal lands.
