Not sure why Republicans are so intent on pushing America toward a police state, but Texas just gave us another example. GOP leaders forced Democratic lawmakers who had broken quorum to sign so-called “permission slips,” effectively agreeing to be tracked and escorted by state troopers from the Department of Public Safety anytime they left the chamber. Rep. Nicole Collier of Fort Worth refused to go along, saying it stripped her of her dignity and handed Republicans political control over her movements. Instead, she turned the House floor into a protest site, sleeping there overnight in defiance. She’s also filed a habeas corpus petition, arguing that this forced monitoring amounts to unlawful confinement.
