In America, we don’t use federal agents to intimidate citizens out of participating in their own democracy. Yet more than a dozen Border Patrol agents showed up Thursday in downtown Los Angeles at a rally Gov. Gavin Newsom held on congressional redistricting an event that had nothing to do with immigration. Masked, armed, and some carrying rifles with tactical helmets, the agents lined up outside the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo while Newsom and other leaders spoke inside. Local officials called it what it was: a brazen show of force meant to send a message.
