The Trump administration announced that it will launch a comprehensive review of both current and upcoming Smithsonian Institution exhibitions, examining display text, online materials, and social media posts “to evaluate tone, historical context, and adherence to American ideals.” According to a letter sent to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III, museums will be given 120 days to make changes to any content deemed unacceptable by the administration. The letter instructs that any flagged material be revised to “replace divisive or politically driven language with unifying, factually grounded, and constructive descriptions”, nothing like rewriting history, of course.
