MAGA supporters often argue, “They should’ve come here legally.” But many did and they’re still being targeted. One former interpreter for U.S. forces in Afghanistan was detained by immigration agents in Connecticut last month after showing up for a routine green card appointment. Another was arrested in June, just minutes after attending his first asylum hearing in San Diego.
These Afghans, who risked their lives assisting the U.S. during its 20-year war and now face Taliban retribution, are being swept up by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Their attorneys submitted military contracts, commendations, visa applications, and recommendation letters all documenting their service to American forces. None of it seemed to matter.
