The House moved today to approve a White House request to rescind $9 billion in funding for foreign aid and public broadcasting, following an unusual Senate vote that saw Republicans effectively surrender a key piece of Congress’s constitutional spending authority. In a 51–48 vote held overnight, Senate Republicans pushed the measure through despite objections from two GOP senators, who warned their party was relinquishing Congress’s power of the purse to the executive branch.
