The Supreme Court issued an emergency ruling that lifted a lower court’s block on the Trump administration’s planned layoffs at the Department of Education. The decision permits the administration to move forward with dismissing nearly 1,400 employees, about a third of the agency’s staff, and to shift certain responsibilities to state governments or other federal departments. The original injunction, issued by a Massachusetts district judge, argued the cuts could impair the department’s ability to meet its legal obligations.
