A DOGE staffer has assumed control over the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), an agency traditionally independent from direct White House authority. Adam Blake, now serving as the DOGE-appointed lead at the NRC, has been tasked with carrying out directives from Trump. This includes overseeing workforce reductions at the agency. While the president can appoint commissioners to the NRC, the agency itself is meant to operate independently and is not subject to presidential control in the same manner as typical executive agencies. This is not normal.
