The Social Security Administration (SSA) has always been a nonpartisan agency focused on serving the public, until now.

This week, the SSA sent out an unprecedented email claiming that Trump’s so-called “one big, beautiful 💩 bill” eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for recipients. That statement is deeply misleading and dangerously political, and it’s not coming from a campaign, but from a government agency now being used to spread misinformation.

The truth? The bill does not eliminate federal income taxes on Social Security benefits. Due to reconciliation rules used to pass it, the bill only provides a temporary tax deduction, not a full exemption. The deduction is capped at $6,000 for individuals and $12,000 for married seniors, and begins to phase out at $75,000/$150,000 income levels. It’s not permanent, and it doesn’t benefit everyone.

Frank Bisignano, Trump’s handpicked SSA commissioner, called this a “historic step forward.” What’s historic is the politicization of an agency that has never, in its history, issued statements like this.

Meanwhile, the same bill slashes food assistance, cuts people from health insurance, stalls clean energy efforts, and explodes the national debt, all while delivering short-term gimmicks dressed up as long-term relief.

This isn’t just a policy disagreement. It’s a weaponization of government to mislead the public and we all deserve better.
