“Is there any sign of life?”
“Have we heard a heartbeat?”
“Does she feel any kicking?”
“We don’t have the equipment to do that.”
That’s the full 911 audio from a nurse inside an ICE detention center near Denver, calling for help as a four-months-pregnant woman bled and cried out in pain.
This isn’t an isolated failure. Across the country, ICE detention centers are in a full-blown medical crisis, one hidden behind locked doors and sealed records. With zero congressional oversight.
In just the first few months of this year, 10 of the largest ICE facilities made nearly 400 emergency 911 calls, including:
– 50+ potential cardiac episodes
– 26 seizures
– 17 head injuries
– 6 sexual abuse reports (including staff on detainee)
– Pregnancy complications at more than half of facilities
And that’s just what made it to 911. Most emergencies never leave the gates.
But the system-wide failures go even deeper:
– In Texas, detained adults and children have been fighting for clean water.
– Disabled detainees, like double amputee, are being denied prosthetics and basic medical devices, leaving them immobile and at risk.
– A 68-year-old man died in ICE custody this May during transport in Georgia, no proper medical response, no accountability.
– Miami’s Krome facility has seen multiple deaths amid severe overcrowding and medical neglect.
– The Irwin County Detention Center was exposed for performing invasive gynecological procedures on detainees, often without clear consent.
– Private prison giants like CoreCivic and GEO run many of these facilities. Their track records? Dozens of deaths, massive understaffing, and near-zero transparency.
– ICE has shut down its internal oversight arms, slashing inspections and leaving detained people with no real way to report abuse.
Clean water, medical care, and safety. These are non-negotiable human rights. Instead, we’re seeing a taxpayer-funded machine of neglect, profit, and cruelty. This is not broken it’s working exactly as designed by the Trump administration. Abolish ICE!
