Tyler Hassen, a Musk staffer, fired an Interior Department lawyer after the attorney, along with at least two senior IT officials, resisted efforts by DOGE-affiliated employees to access a federal payroll system containing sensitive data on thousands of employees. Hassen formally notified the associate solicitor for Interior’s Division of General Law of their termination. However, efforts are already underway to reinstate them, as Hassen lacked the authority to fire the attorney, whose actions are protected under the Whistleblower Protection Act and other federal laws.
