Trump said Harvard would lose its tax-exempt status. “We are going to be taking away Harvard’s Tax Exempt Status. It’s what they deserve!” he wrote on social media. All Harvard really needs is a screenshot of that post because under federal law, the president cannot direct the IRS to conduct tax investigations. In fact, IRS employees are required to report any such command to an inspector general.
