Trump is lashing out at federal judges who have ruled his executive orders unlawful or unconstitutional, denouncing them as “communists” and falsely claiming they’re “trying to take away the power given to the president.” But this tactic is nothing new.

The first Red Scare began over a century ago, from 1917 to 1920, when the U.S. government cracked down on labor unions, immigrants, and political dissenters through the Palmer Raids thousands were arrested, many deported without trial, all under the guise of fighting communism.

Then came the Second Red Scare, McCarthyism, led by Senator Joseph McCarthy, who accused countless Americans, including government officials, Hollywood figures, and military leaders, of being communist sympathizers. It created a climate of fear, blacklisting, loyalty oaths, and ruined careers with little to no evidence.

Just like back then, here we are again because we didn’t learn from our past.
