Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has handed over control of the Department of the Interior to Tyler Hassen, a former oil executive and Musk staffer. Hassen, who came to the agency through the so-called DOGE, now has broad authority to cut costs and consolidate operations across the department, including oversight of IT, human resources, financial management, training, international affairs, communications, and more. This move is highly unusual and significantly reshapes how the Interior Department functions. The agency manages more than 500 million acres of public land, including national parks and wildlife areas, and regulates drilling on public lands and waters. If Doug Burgum doesn’t actually want to lead the Interior Department, he should step aside because right now, he’s letting Elon Musk’s team run it for him.
