The House bill, titled the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, passed by a vote of 220 to 208. It would require states to obtain in-person proof of citizenship—such as a passport or birth certificate—from individuals seeking to register to vote. Real IDs and state-issued IDs would not be accepted. The bill would also require additional documentation from individuals who have changed their last name if their ID does not match their birth certificate. The bill is expected to fail in the Senate.
